The Pines Around Gregg County

Loblolly and shortleaf pine dominate the tree line on most local lots, and both host southern pine beetle and the smaller Ips engravers. Neither insect has much interest in a pine that is growing well. Attacks concentrate where roots were cut, where soil was compacted under parked vehicles, or where a dry stretch drained the tree of resin pressure.

Hardwood Troubles

Post oak, water oak and southern red oak carry a different set of problems. Hypoxylon canker follows drought stress and announces itself when bark sloughs away in plates. Oak wilt travels through connected roots and through beetles visiting fresh wounds. Sooty mold and mistletoe look alarming from the driveway and are usually far less serious.

Below the Ground

A great deal of what gets blamed on insects actually starts at the roots. This county has pockets of tight clay and low ground that hold water after heavy spring rain, and saturated soil suffocates fine roots before any fungus shows up. The symptoms overhead can look exactly like thirst.

Treatable, Manageable, or Neither

Sorting the fixable from the finished saves real money. Scale insects, mistletoe and many drainage problems respond well to a change in care or one targeted pruning cut. A pine under mass beetle attack does not, and an oak already carrying hypoxylon crust is reporting a decline that began seasons earlier.

Start With the Pattern, Not the Leaf

Diagnosis begins with distribution. Injury spread evenly across a whole canopy, worst at the outer tips and on the sunniest exposure, generally points toward water, heat or roots. Injury confined to one limb, one flank or a single distinct patch of foliage points toward something local instead: an insect colony, a canker, a girdling wire. Walk the entire tree and the rest of the yard before reaching for a hand lens.

What Saturated Ground Does to Fine Roots

Feeder roots need air every bit as much as they need moisture. Low corners of a yard here can hold standing water for days after spring rain, and roots sitting in saturated clay smother and rot. The tree answers with undersized pale leaves, a thinning crown and fall color arriving weeks early, which is precisely how thirst reads from the street. Fungi that thrive in wet ground then follow the drainage fault.

Scale Insects and the Black Film They Leave

A sooty black film coating foliage, twigs and whatever sits parked beneath the branches is sooty mold. The mold is not attacking the tree at all: it grows on honeydew, the sugary waste dropped by scale insects, aphids and other sap feeders working overhead. Flip a leaf and run a thumb along a twig to find the actual culprits. Deal with the insect and the coating weathers off across the following season.

Mistletoe in the Winter Silhouette

Mistletoe is easiest to inventory in winter, when a bare hardwood shows dense green clumps against an open sky. It is a parasitic plant, spread by birds, that sinks anchoring tissue deep inside the branch it occupies. Snapping off the visible growth accomplishes nothing, because the embedded portion simply regrows. Real removal means cutting the host branch back well past the attachment, which is only sensible on limbs the tree can spare.

When to Stop Guessing and Dig

Where the pattern stays ambiguous, go get physical evidence. Open a small hole out at the drip line and feel the soil at spade depth: dusty and bone dry tells one story, gray and sour smelling tells a very different one. Check where the trunk meets the ground for a buried flare or a circling root. Photographs of the same tree a month apart settle more arguments than any single visit.

Hypoxylon Canker and Oak Wilt in Longview Oaks
The Fungus That Waits for a Weak Oak

Hypoxylon canker is caused by fungi in the genus Biscogniauxia, still widely known by the older name Hypoxylon. Their spores are common throughout East Texas woodland and sit quietly in the outer wood of many perfectly healthy oaks. They only turn aggressive once the host loses vigor, which is why cases cluster after drought years, after construction severs roots, and in trees that have been in slow decline for a decade.

Reading Bark That Falls Away in Plates

The signature symptom is bark peeling off in irregular plates to expose a crust beneath. That crust is fungal tissue called stroma, often tan or olive when it first appears, weathering to silver gray and eventually to black. Fine brown powder collecting below the trunk is spore material. By the time broad sheets of stroma are showing, the sapwood under them has already been consumed and the stem above is structurally unsound.

How Oak Wilt Travels Between Trees

Oak wilt is a vascular disease with two routes of spread. Oaks growing near one another graft their roots underground, and the pathogen passes from tree to tree along those connections, which produces an expanding pocket of dying oaks instead of scattered single losses. It also moves overland when sap feeding beetles collect spores from fungal mats on an infected red oak and carry them to a fresh wound elsewhere.

The Pruning Calendar That Matters Most

That second route is the one a property owner controls. Any pruning cut or bark scrape on an oak becomes an entry point while those beetles are active, and spring is the riskiest stretch of the Texas year. Standard guidance is to hold non urgent oak pruning outside that window and to seal every oak wound right away, accidental ones included. Sealing wounds is advised for oaks specifically, not for trees generally.

Which of the Two You Can Still Act On

These two diseases call for opposite responses. Hypoxylon has no chemical cure, so the useful work is lowering stress on the oaks not yet affected and dealing safely with wood that has already failed. Oak wilt does have management options: trenching to sever the root grafts between trees, and preventive fungicide injection by a trained applicator. Both depend on catching it early and on a laboratory confirmed identification.

Why Beetles Choose the Tree Next Door

Bark beetles are not random about their hosts. A vigorous loblolly floods any fresh boring wound with resin fast enough to push a small insect back out of its tunnel, so the beetles that succeed are working on pines whose resin pressure has already fallen. Trenching through the root plate, compacted ground, lightning injury and a long rainless summer all lower that defense. On most Longview properties, the first pine lost is the one that got disturbed.

Southern Pine Beetle and the Winding Gallery

Southern pine beetle is the species that spreads on its own. Adults tunnel through the outer bark and cut S shaped galleries that wander across the grain in the inner bark, girdling the stem as they extend. The beetles also introduce staining fungi that interfere with water movement through the sapwood, so a heavily attacked pine is being killed two ways at once. Infestations widen as a spot, pulling in neighbors that were never stressed.

Ips Engravers and Tops That Fade First

Ips engraver beetles behave differently from that. Their galleries run with the grain in rough I, H or Y shapes, and the smaller species often begin high in the crown, which is why a fading top above otherwise green foliage deserves a close look. Ips generally requires a tree that is already failing, or a stack of fresh cut pine to breed in. Green logs left through the summer supply the next generation with a nursery.

Pitch Tubes, Sawdust and Color at the Base

Examine the trunk before concluding anything. Popcorn sized blobs of hardened resin on the outer bark, known as pitch tubes, mark attack points, and how high they sit on the stem hints at which insect is present. Reddish boring dust gathering in bark crevices or around the root flare is a second clue. Large soft resin masses low on the trunk usually indicate black turpentine beetle, which works slowly and rarely kills outright.

What Actually Helps Once Beetles Are In

After a pine is fully colonized, nothing applied to the outside of the bark reaches the insects underneath, and that tree will not recover. Attention belongs on the green pines still standing nearby: leave the root zone alone, water deeply during drought, and move infested material off the property promptly instead of stockpiling it. Preventive trunk treatment exists for individual high value pines and is work for a licensed applicator.
